Retrieve GMail & HotMail with PopTray, K9 & AVG on Window 7

Post by KY Dave » Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:46 am

I've started using PopTray on a new PC with Windows Seven installed. It works better when setup in the PUBLIC section of the hard drive, NOT in the PROGRAM section. This location lets PopTray write to the directory it is placed inside, where the PROGRAM section does not.

I am able to check accounts and remove spam using PopTray, K9 and AVG 9.0. I'll give the details of the setups below for each program.

AVG 9.0 Setup

In the TOOLS, ADVANCED SETTINGS, click the EMAIL SCANNER section and then SERVERS.

Now click on the POP3 section and then ADD SERVER to add a new server to AVG.

The new SERVER NAME = HOTMAIL.
TYPE OF LOGIN = fixed host
in the blank add -> pop3.live.com
ADDITIONAL SETTINGS
LOCAL PORT = 10111
CONNECTION = SSL

Check the box for ACTIVATE THIS SERVER

Now click on the POP3 section and then ADD SERVER to add a new server to AVG.

The new SERVER NAME = GMAIL.
TYPE OF LOGIN = fixed host
in the blank add -> pop.gmail.com
ADDITIONAL SETTINGS
LOCAL PORT = 10112
CONNECTION = SSL

Check the box for ACTIVATE THIS SERVER

ADD a RULE

This rule MARKS AS SPAM any email with the percentage of 50.0% - 85.9%.

Code: Select all

MARK AS SPAM RULE

NEEDED = ANY ROW

HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][5?.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][6?.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][7?.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][80.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][81.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][82.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][83.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][84.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][85.?%]*

ACTIONS - IGNORE DON'T NOTIFY, MARK AS SPAM
SAVE RULES

ADD a RULE

This rule DELETES any SPAM email with the percentage of 86.0% - 100% and those marked from the DNSBL.

Code: Select all

DELETE SPAM RULE

NEEDED = ANY ROW

HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][86.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][87.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][88.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][89.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][9?.?%]*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[Spam][100*
ADD ROW -> HEADER, WILDCARD, *[DNSBL]*

ACTIONS - IGNORE DON'T NOTIFY, DELETE, LOG RULES
SAVE RULES.

This example has the breaking point at 85.9% for MARK AS SPAM and above that is DELETED. Following this example, it would be easy for you to set the percentage at the point you would like to use.

Now all email ranked 86% or above will be DELETED from Server. Mail ranked from 50% to 85.9% will be MARKED AS SPAM. Then simply click the DELETE SPAM Button after taking a look to check for sure it is SPAM.

After cleaning the SPAM off your accounts, then use the email client of your choice with these PopTray account settings to download just your GOOD EMAIL.

I know this is a complicated system, but it works EXTREMELY WELL once setup, there are almost NO adjustments to be made. If K9 marks a message incorrectly, you just open K9 and click the SPAM or GOOD button. When an email from your friends come through, RIGHT CLICK on it in K9 and select WHITELIST, FROM ADDRESS, OK. In PopTray, RIGHT CLICK on the email and select LISTS, ADD SENDER TO WHITELIST, OK. Those are the only adjustments you should need to make.

K9 stores a copy of the emails it scans, so if an email is deleted accidentally as SPAM, the last 2,000 are copied in K9, giving you a chance to retrieve the message.
