RuneScape Account-Notice passes all rules - not deleted

Post by luckyluke2301 » Mon May 28, 2012 7:55 am

Hi everybody, I am working with PopTray for more than 10 years and I love it. I am using a white list and rules (no blacklist). My rule 830 shall delete these spamming RuneScape mails and it is set as follows:

[Rule830]
Name=830 RuneScape
Enabled=1
New=0
Account=0
Operator=0
RowCount=3
Area=Subject
Func=Contains
Text=RuneScape
Not=0
Wav=
Delete=1
Ignore=0
EXE=
Important=0
Spam=0
Protect=0
Log=0
TrayColor=-1
Area2=Body
Func2=Contains
Text2=RuneScape
Not2=0
Area3=From (address)
Func3=Contains
Text3=runescape
Not3=0

Despite this rule I still get such RuneScape messages which have following source:

Return-Path: <noreply@runescape.com>

Does anyone know why the messages are not automatically deleted by my rule?

Thanks

Check if you have the "Retrieve Body while Checking" option enabled on the Advanced Options page. This does slow down Poptray if enabled but if you are going to test for text in the body, there is no other way.

Optionally, check for words in the subject only, this is faster than requiring Poptray to download the body first as it checks for spam.

Thanks for your quick reply. As you can see from my pasted rule in my original posting I am checking subject as well as mail body. Usually this works fine but for some unknown reason the mails from RuneScape are totally ignored no matter how I modify the rule. Are there probably some codes which can fool spamfilters like Poptray? Or is there probably a limit for the number of rules? Thanks...

There are way's to cause Poptray to error out by using non-standard codes or formats in the email but they actually throw an error in Poptray when they happen and as far as I know, the known ways of causing this to happen have already been worked out.... You would know if this actually has happened since Poptray would give errors when it got the offending email and wouldn't work properly.

I'm not aware of any limits on the number of rules but that doesn't mean much since others may not simply have reached a limit if it exists....

You can test for this... Make a backup copy your current Rules.ini file or just rename it to Rules.old ... Then create a new identical rule to the one you want to test and see if it works then or not...

If not... verify all of your rule settings... things like make certain that what is needed is selected as Any ....

Try breaking this rule into seperate rules, one for each area you are checking in ( address, subject, body etc )... enable logging so you can see which rule is actually working and which one may not be... This will help you narrow down where the issue may be at so you can then focus on just the problem area if needed.

When you've completed the testing... rename or copy back your backup of the rules.ini file and make any needed corrections.

Thanks for your reply and testing inspiration....with this I got the confirmation that my rule works fine the way it is and that there is no rule number limit yet reached if any at all. Obviously the mails, which are issued in chineese format, can somehow circumvent Poptray. The moment I forward the original spam mail to myself it is deleted immediately by Poptray. I posted the mail's source in original post above. Can you probably see some parts in it which might cause this fooling?

What you posted earlier is not in chinese....

Perhaps you mean to say it is in UTF8 which is not a supported format for Poptray but there is a fork of Poptray called PoptrayU which does support it...

Their website is http://sourceforge.net/projects/poptrayu/

By the way... if you are trying to filter out other language emails... your rules would also need to be in that language... Poptray nor any other program I am aware of would be able to translate

luckyluke2301, I am the developer of PopTrayU (which builds upon PopTray's code) and I plugged your email and rule just like you have supplied here, into PopTrayU 4.0.5 (because if that is a bug I'd like to fix it) and it successfully deletes it. I have not made any changes to the rules or whitelist code in PopTrayU, so presumably it works identical to PopTray 3.2. Your subject is not UTF-8 or anything that should cause PopTray difficulty. Your subject is not UTF-8 or anything that should cause PopTray difficulty. I am suspicious that perhaps you have another rule or whitelist condition that is getting processed before this one which is taking effect on that particular email? I would take a careful look at your other rules to see if any other rule might be interfering.
