Running X-Windows on Linux from a Win2000 PC

Post by Renier » Wed Apr 07, 2004 9:34 am

I'm looking for and X-Windows GUI to my Linux box that I can run from my Windows PC over SSH to the Linux server. Hopefully something free. Since I'm not sure what exactly it's called (X Server?), it hard to search for.

you mean a program to 'take over' the desktop on another PC ?? like remote control ??

i'm using VNC (http://www.realvnc.com/), it's cross-platform so i can take over my Linux box from Windows and vice versa ... also take a look at TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/) and for some history : http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

i never used it over SSH, but it looks like it can be done ; http://www.shebeen.com/vnc_ssh/
just Google for 'vnc ssh' ...

I'm using VNC since years and it's easy to use, simple and so on. But:
* it doesn't support any file transfer;
* a very (in)famous "feature/bug" give limit to password to 8 chars: i.e. if your password is abcdefghijk but you input abcdefgh you WILL BE able to access also if password is wrong;
* username/passwords are sent as clear text;

My biggest problem with VNC is speed. Since it sends the phyical screen graphics (compressed) over the line it can be a pain to use on a slow connection. That is why I would prefer to go the "X Server" route.

try TightVNC, it's optimized for slow & medium speed connections, hence the name ...

Did you ever find a solution, Renier? I am tired of VNC as well... too slow.

No, never found one. I do most of my admin through the command-line (PuTTY SSH client), and if I have to use the GUI, I do a short bit of VNC.

Did someone try Xwin32?

I used one, and there are many versions availables... these are some found through Google: 1 2 3

I'm not sure about licenses, indeed.

$225? I'll just stay with VNC for now.

Edit: Cygwin/X or MI/X might be an option.

I been playing with NXserver / client via ssh on my LAN. Not sure how well it'll work over the 'Net with a slow connection.
