The internet’s undersea world

Post by homaquebec » Tue Feb 05, 2008 7:50 pm

According to The Guardian, “the vast majority of the world’s communications are not carried by satellites but by an altogether older technonolgy: cables under the earth’s oceans. As a ship [Wednesday, January 27, 2008] accidentally wipe[d] out Asia’s net access, this map shows how we rely on collections of wires of less than 10 cm [about 4 inches] diameter to link us together.”

Thank goodness that the majority uses cables instead of satellites... satellites are too prone to being disrupted by sun spots and other sun "weather"
