PopTray(U) & Spamihilator

Post by KY Dave » Thu Apr 25, 2013 5:12 pm

I've setup PopTray or PopTray U on a PC with Windows Seven 64 bit installed.

I am able to check HotMail, GMail, Mail.com and POP3 accounts and remove spam using PopTray and Spamihilator. I'll give the major details of the setups below for each program.

PopTray(U) Settings

PopTray(U) account settings are the only thing that must be altered.

The server name is added to the front of the LOGIN and then separated from the USERNAME by an AMPERSIGN ( & ).

An example would be "mail.poptray.org&kydave@poptray.org".

The SERVER is always 127.0.0.1.

The port is always 110.

No SSL Plugins are needed when using PopTray(U) with Spamihilator.

Spamihilator Settings

General Settings - Check the box for LAUNCH SPAMIHILATOR AT WINDOWS STARTUP

RECYCLE BIN - Check the box for KEEP SPAM MAIL ON SERVER UNTIL I DELETE FROM RECYCLE BIN.

TRAINING AREA - Check the box for PRE-MARK ALL SPAM MAIL.
Check the box for AUTOMATICALLY WHEN TRAINING AREA IS OPENED.

SSL/TLS - Check the box for AUTOMATICALLY ENABLE SSL/TLS IF AVAILABLE.

FILTER PROPERTIES - Check the box for ENABLE PLUGIN FILTERS.

AGGRESSIVENESS - Set to NORMAL.

There is a short learning curve for Spamihilator, they use the term 'training', but I am getting excellent results and the ability of using PopTray with all my email accounts makes the training period a small price to pay. There are many more settings in Spamihilator but these will get you going and deleting spam.

K9 had been my spam removal program of choice for years, but I could not use it with SSL accounts.

Hope this helps others too.
