I think I found why PopTray was issuing its "Uneven size in DecodeToStream" error message. The message was spam with a MIME part containing a GIF file encoded using Base64. It was 8,407 characters long so it isn't a multiple of 4 octets (which I saw in another post here is the expected modulo). I ca...

I found the cause of the "max line length exceeded" error in PopTray. I have my resume over at ajb.org (America Job Bank) and then send out a daily notice of jobs that matched my search criteria. Their e-mails have lines that are 1024 characters long. They are all exactly 1024 characters long so it ...

I had uninstalled PopTray. After reading the replies here, I installed it again. The problem with the first install was that all I could use was the Raw tab panel but it wasn't showing the raw data for the message. I couldn't switch between Body and Raw, it was stuck on Raw, but what I saw was only ...

How do I see *all* of the headers?

When I preview a mail item listed in PopTray 3.1, it downloads the mail (everytime instead of using a cached copy if viewed before). Okay, so where are ALL of the headers? All I see in the Preview mode are the useless headers when attempting to define spam filters. I need to see what headers were ad...

I think you'll find this to be of some help with rule precidence questions. http://forum.poptray.org/viewtopic.php?t=1978&highlight=rule+order Which basically says that there is no way to stop processing rules (actually that discussion never discussed how rules amongst themselves handle execution o...

Don't know about the POP3 differences between your e-mail notifier and PopTray, so I'll address only the Gmail issue. Gmail provides POP3 support but there are some problems with it. Does PopTray actually support for SSL connects? Gmail demands the use of SSL to connect to the POP3 and SMTP mail ser...

Ah, I didn't realize that the wildcarded string matching actually anchored the string. So, as you say, using wildcarding with "re[*]: " would work (I included the closing bracket, colon, and space because perhaps henchard doesn't want to fire on "re[somestringWithNoClosingBracketAndMissingAcolon", a...

Is the stop-clause implied in the rules?

I'm not sure how PopTray handles rules and their order. When a rule triggers on a message, does it perform its action and then continue exercising the rest of the rules against that same message (as long as the action wasn't "Delete from server")? Or, when a rule fires on a message, does PopTray cea...

Attachments aren't something separate from the e-mail body. They are just a piece of text within the body of the e-mail (whose encoding using text represents the binary equivalent of the original file). POP3 hasn't a clue about differentiation between one part of the body and anothe part. The TOP an...

I found the "header" rule unreliable. I run my clients (e-mail monitor and e-mail client) through SpamPal which will add its "X-SpamPal: SPAM" header onto spam e-mails. I then defined a rule in PopTray to delete e-mails on the server that had this header. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. I had be...

I was going by Vitoco's remark that fields that contains tabs can screwup the tab-delimited layout of the fields. Since tab characters are just as invisible as spaces, the user can't visually note when tabs are used versus a visible character, like a comma. Using the same argument that quotes would ...

Re: How about a logfile that could be imported to a spreadsheet?

... this is only interesting to a tiny minority of users ... That's why my first post said, "This is minor." Since the first line for column header won't ever match up with the data on the next lines, I don't see much point to it. The fields are self-evident by the data they contain, so the easiest...

The data type of each field within a record is defined by the DTD (document type definition) which, I believe, can be within the same or different file than the data. Now they've come out with XML Schema for more rigorous type declaration. I've never gotten into XML and only mentioned it as a possib...

I vote for a standard data file format, like CSV or XML

The tab character won't help to align data into columns since the fields within each record can be of variable length (from zero characters to whatever is the maximum size of the buffer used to hold the value). Using whitespace, like tabs and spaces, will confuse any program trying to read the field...

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize tabs had been added. However, as you noted, tabs within the From or Subject headers will screw this all up. That's why using non-delimited strings with whitespace as the field separator often doesn't work. The strings have to be quoted, then you delimit the ...

I didn't install the Hotmail plug-in for PopTray because I still wanted to go through SpamPal for detecting spam. That means I have: client (POP3) <-- [6110] SpamPal (POP3) <-- [8110] Hotmail Popper (HTTP) <-- Hotmail The port numbers are in brackets while the protocol is in parenthesis. Because ant...

How about a logfile that could be imported to a spreadsheet?

Now that I think of it, I'm wondering if the rules.log file shouldn't be in an importable format so users could look at it in a spreadsheet program. All the strings in each record (line) of the logfile would need to be quoted and then either used commas or spaces to delimit the fields. The logfile w...

Misaligned column titles in rules log

This is minor. When viewing the rules.log file, the first line has titles for the columnar data in the logfile. Even when using a monospaced font, the titles do not match up with their columns. It has: Date Action RuleName From Subject Account 10/23/2003 12:05:32 AM DELETE SpamPal Trap Susan Arnold ...
