1000's of messages

Post by quarky42 » Mon Jan 17, 2005 10:20 pm

Is there a way to make poptray only check for "New" messages.

ie. My friend leaves 1000+ messages on his account. I tried to get him to use Poptray but he quit because it kept checking all 1000+ messages each time.

I was wondering if there was a way to have poptray keep some sort of cache of messages it has already seen and only get the headers for new messages.

Thanks

No, there is not.

You can turn on QUICK CHECKING on PopTray's OPTION tab, ADVANCED OPTIONS.

You can turn OFF RETRIEVE BODY WHILE CHECKING on PopTray's OPTION tab, ADVANCED OPTIONS.

You can turn on REMEMBER VIEWED MESSAGES on PopTray's OPTION tab,
MISCELLANEOUS.

Then SAVE OPTIONS, QUIT PopTray and RESTART for changes to take effect.

PopTray will still d/l all the headers at startup, but after that the checks will be quite a bit faster.

You could suggest removing some of the 1,000 emails to your friend.

Thanks,

I tried suggesting that they clean up their mailbox. You should have seen the look of horror. (darn packrats)

put old mail in folders

hey quarky, what wrong with being a packrat?
I've kept all my mail from the last two years

Anyway, your friend should be able to avoid the "download 1000's of messages every time" problem if he/she just sort some of the mail into folders.

For most combo webmail-POP3 servers, the main folder is called INBOX or MAIN. A POP3 program (like Poptray) will attempt to download everything in the main folder.

If you move email into a separate folder (e.g. "ARCHIVE" or "2003 MAIL"), then Poptray will not see it, thus will not download it again and again.

Thanks for trying. I do greatly appreciate the good advice. I tried that too, but the raised eyebrows and blank stare is what I got for the "clean up your folders" advice.

I did mention that he could move his mail to other folders and it went downhill from there.

By friend I should mention boss... lol ;?) so I have to be somewhat resigned to him being set in his ways.

Oh well. No poptray for him. He can keep using webmail. Thanks anyhow.
