How I can get my Gmail account on PopTray

Post by tal » Tue Feb 01, 2005 9:03 pm

I started working with PopTray few days ago and I was not able to configure the Gmail account. I was searching in this forum for a solution but no luck. :cry: I would appreciate very much if someone can guide me how to do it. :?: I was able to configure my POP3 accounts and it’s working great. :)

FREEPOPS is located HERE.
After DOWNLOADING and INSTALLING FREEPOPS,
in PopTray on the ACCOUNTS tab...

SERVER = LOCALHOST or 127.0.0.1
PROTOCOL = POP3
PORT = 2000
LOGIN = EMAIL ADDRESS -> KYDAVE@POPTRAY.COM
PASSWORD = PASSWORD

Thank you very much for the quick reply. My Gmail account works on my outlook (not outlook express) and I was wondering if there is a way that Gmail will work as my regular accounts with PopTray without using FREEPOPS. :)

Yes, but you have to download and use the SSL plugin for PopTray.

Take a look at this thread,
viewtopic.php?t=2155

Use the SEARCH feature of the forum looking for GMAIL or SSL plugin.

With all respect I could not find any help in the link, I would appreciate if you can put a link for a working SSL plugin and instructions for some people with limited knowledge. :cry:

- Download:
http://unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor ... _beta6.exe
Edit: now this URL is correct :)

- Install the plugins then restart PopTray.

- Poptray options, plugins section:
Tick this check box: 'POP3 with SSL og APOP'

- Save options, EXIT PopTray so the program is not running at all (right click icon in system tray and select quit!

- Start PopTray once again. (I don't know if these restarts of PopTray are 100% necessary but it should pretty much prevent stupid errors like plugins not being recognized and started from happening.)

Acounts: create a new account
Name: Gmail (does not matter)
Server: pop.gmail.com
Protocol: POP3 SSL
Login: <whatever>@gmail.com (your GMail e-mail address)

Save account... now you should able to check gmail from PopTray.

Note: When I preview a mail from PopTray (onl GMail), it disappears from the list. When I check for mail using Thunderbird it will be retrieved as a new mail though. Weird.

I do appreciate your efforts and I downloaded the zip file, but I DO NOT HAVE the directory Program Files\poptray\plugins. What I don’t understand is: why it was so simple to set Gmail with outlook (excellent and simple and working). But with PopTray which is a very nice program it is so complicate. Also on the settings you did not put which port to use.

Outlook supports SSL (secure connections) out of the box, PopTray needs the plugin in order to support SSL. The reason? One of the design goals of PopTray was to keep it small. With plugins anyone can add features that they need, while others are not bothered with them. Until now, not many users needed SSL support.

Well, simply create a directory in the PopTray directory, name it 'plugins' and extract the files from the zip file into this directory. Also make sure that you are running PopTray 3.1.

Port 995! :)

I followed your instructions and created the directory Program Files\poptray\plugins. Then I extract the zip file to the new directory, but the Plug-ins window in Option was empty. Also I could not set the Protocol to POP3 SSL I had only one option POP3. I am using the latest version 3.1 and I think it would be a good idea to set the SSL option on the next version. Meanwhile I’ll check Gmail with my Outlook unless you are willing to get it work.

So sorry, Tal, I made you download the wrong file! :(

Delete the contents of PLUGINS...

Download this file:
http://unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor ... _beta6.exe

It includes a nice installer :)

Here is what I have done to make it working:
Download this file and install it:
http://unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor ... _beta6.exe

Then go to Options/Plug-ins and make sure that you chacked the
POP3 with SSL or APOP This is the only one you need for Gmail.

After that go to Accounts and set up the Gmail Account:
Name: Any Name you want
Server: pop.gmail.com
Protocol: POP3 SSL
Login: your login
Password: your Password

The last thing is to quit the program and restart it.
