A Program to view Rules log and stats

Post by marco_the_boy » Fri Mar 18, 2005 11:18 am

I have written a small program to view the Poptray Rules log and show me how many times each rule has been activated.
This helped me reduce my rules count from about 600 to 100.

If you are interested, you can download it (189k) here:

Hi Marco,

When I run the program I get the following error:

(Running WinXP Pro SP1, PopTray v3.1)

Cheers,

OK folks,
I've updated the program to v1.1.

It has fixed the Error 3265.
It now saves the window size and position and the column widths.
It also saves the location of the Poptray installation folder.
You can now sort the list by any column. Just click on the column heading.

Download the updated package here:

Any problems, let me know.

The program works well and I think the changes you made will help the end user too.

Hi Marco,

It's a great addition to PopTray, but I'm afraid I found another bug: When I select "Statistics" from the menu bar, the viewer displays the following error window:

Image

and terminates after I click "OK".

I have also a small request: Could you add a "To" column please.

And a suggestion: have your program incorporated in PopTray, so it can be invoked by pressing a button on PopTray's toolbar

Thanks for a great program,
Ron

Simply set the Log Reader as the EMAIL PROGRAM for your second account in PopTray. Then when you click RUN EMAIL PROGRAM button for the second account the Log Viewer program will automatically start and PopTray will minimize.

In PopTray, on the ACCOUNT tab, select the second (or any) account and point the EMAIL PROGRAM box to the LOG VIEWER program.
SAVE ACCOUNT, QUIT PopTray and RESTART for changes to take effect.

Then when you want the LOG VIEWER program to run, click the second account tab, and click RUN EMAIL CLIENT.

Thanks Dave, that worked. (I set it to the "global" RUN EMAIL PROGRAM function because my email program is always running, so I don't need a function to start it from within PopTray).

Dutchman,
I think I know why you are having that problem.
Open file Rules.log in Notepad.
Are the headings (on the first line) in English?
If not, change the name of the 3rd heading to 'RuleName' (without the quotes) and save it.

Run the Log Viewer again.
Do the Statistics work now?
I have also a small request: Could you add a "To" column please.
Sorry, I cannot add a 'To' column because there is no 'To' column in the Rules.log file.

Yes, the headings were in English , but... because (when I started to test your program) my log file was pretty large (105 kB), as a result of which the log viewer took a long time to start, I deleted part of my original log file, apparently including the header. After deleting the log file and having PopTray create a new one, all was well.
Sorry, I cannot add a 'To' column because there is no 'To' column in the Rules.log file.
After posting that request I also found out that there is no "To" info in the log file. Maybe something for Renier to add.

Thanks again,
Ron

I've updated it to v1.21.

Changes:

Added an option in File menu to edit the Rules.log file. (This assumes you have Notepad.exe on your system.)

Sorting on Date column fixed.

Any chance that it might be posted in public? It would be nice to have...

IF I remember correctly...

Renier won't place the program on SOURCE FORGE because it is not released under any of the open source agreements.

marco_the_boy, the developer of the 'log reader', provided it for download for nearly two years.

I don't have the bandwidth to provide the program to all users on an unlimited scale. I will provide it to those that ask on a limited scale and have PMed you a link.

The download link is working again.

(Sorry about that. I don't know when or how the file got deleted from my FTP server.)

If anybody wants to mirror it on their FTP space, then you have my full permission.
