K9 and spam containing malware question!

Post by ratchet » Tue May 22, 2007 12:22 am

Since K9 stores the spam for x number of days (I set it for two, per your setup), if there is malware embedded in the spam, can it infect your PC? Can anti-malware programs stop it before it's moved to K9? Is this a concern? I'm asking the same question on their forum but it doesn't seem to get a lot of attention so that is why I'm asking here?

Some scanning programs will block it before it's downloaded.
Some scanning programs will find malware in K9's storage area.

Usually, malware won't do anything if it's just downloaded. Usually, it must be opened in Word, Outlook or Outlook Express, rendered by html, or the file must be executed. In my experience, the scanning programs I use will not do anything until the user tries to execute the malware.

Malware has never infected any PC of mine by downloading with PopTray and K9. Your mileage may vary.
