Am I reading previous posts correctly about getting PopTray to work with Gmail that the only way to do so involves having to remove your firewall protection?

Thanks in adavance

Absolutely not... but you would need to give PopTray access to the internet through the ports that your email server uses ( normally port 110 for normal POP3 and 995 for SSL POP3 ) . The only reason I can think of that someone may have suggested turning off a firewall would be simply for quick testing after which you would re-enable it and make any required changes to the fw settings that may be needed.

Afaik, GMail only supports POP3 over SSL (aka secure POP) which is accessed on port 995.

Poptray doesn't do secure POP by default, so maybe you could try installing the secure POP plugin or the GMail plugin.

However, I don't use either plugin, so I can't vouch for them. Instead, I've been using Freepops to access my GMail.
