Is it possible to retrieve Hotmail with PopTray and AVG only

Post by homaquebec » Sun Nov 13, 2011 10:54 pm

Following the instructions that you give in Retrieve GMail & HotMail with PopTray, K9 & AVG on Window 7 sticky post, I succeeded to set up, on my computer, three accounts (2 Hotmail ones and one Gmail one) with AVG, K9 and PopTray.

But a friend of mine does not use K9. Is it possible to have his Hotmail account being checked by PopTray with AVG only? If yes, here are my questions.

About AVG 9.0 Setup, you write:

In the TOOLS, ADVANCED SETTINGS, click the EMAIL SCANNER section and then SERVERS.

Now click on the POP3 section and then ADD SERVER to add a new server to AVG.

The new SERVER NAME = HOTMAIL.
TYPE OF LOGIN = fixed host
In the blank add -> pop3.live.com
ADDITIONAL SETTINGS
LOCAL PORT = 10111
CONNECTION = SSL

Check the box for ACTIVATE THIS SERVER

Now click on the POP3 section and then ADD SERVER to add a new server to AVG.

On the computer of my friend, what would be the settings?

About PopTray Setup, you write:

On PopTray's HOTMAIL ACCOUNT Tab...
Set the SERVER to 127.0.0.1
Set PORT to 9999
Set PROTOCOL to POP3
Set LOGIN = 127.0.0.1/10111/your_email@hotmail.com

On the computer of my friend, what would be the settings?

Thank You.

Here is AVG's help page on the subject... http://free.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-4387

The settings in AVG will require some of the following info ( pop only )

Here’s the information to configure your account on your preferred e-mail client:
- POP3 Server: pop3.live.com (port 995)

- SMTP Server: smtp.live.com (port 25)

Note: If port 25 has been blocked in your network or by your ISP, you can set SMTP port to 587 with TLS or SSL Encryption depending on the client in use

Please make sure to check the box that indicates that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most e-mail clients, this is not checked by default).

- Username: your full e-mail address

- Password: your Windows Live ID password

Thanks.

Do I have to change something in PopTray settings (with AVG only and for a Hotmail account)) in comparison with these ones:

On PopTray's HOTMAIL ACCOUNT Tab...
Set the SERVER to 127.0.0.1
Set PORT to 9999
Set PROTOCOL to POP3
Set LOGIN = 127.0.0.1/10111/your_email@hotmail.com ?

Set the port number to the same number that is in the AVG email scanner settings... Remember that the SSL setting is disabled in Poptray but enabled in AVG's email scanner setting.
