Poptray + K9 (Bayesian Anti-Spam)

Post by lovelace » Tue Jun 10, 2003 12:28 pm

I asked Robin to implement something in his great K9 to be able to use the poptray 'top' command. Since version 1.05 of K9 it is working.

(I like it more than spampal)

I've installed it and will give it a try. First off I see it does allow TOP commands, but it ignores the number of lines. So in PopTray when you specify number of lines to preview it always gives you 0 lines.

Will see how it performs with spam detecting after some training.

I am learning SpamPal with the Baynesian plugin what is spam and what is not. Some mails are not tagges, but the headers added by the plugin says that the plugin did in fact classify it as spam.

Did any of you guys encounter the same?

I tried K9.
And i must say i am impressed. My number of rules still keeps growing to fight spam. This program seems to detect 90 or 95 % of the spammails by itsself.

A quote from the authors website ( http://keir.net ) :

K9 does not contain spyware, adware or any kind of malware whatsoever. 100% pure. 100% free.

There isn't a way to use K9 with PopTray is there?

I K9 to work with Outlook Express but it isn't for use with PopTray because of PT just using the header info.

Is there something I'm missing with K9?

There is an Advanced Option in K9 called "Translate TOP n 0 commands into RETR n" which then downloads the entire message into K9 even though PopTray is only requeting the headers.

I've been running K9 for 23 days now, and it's finally becoming very accurate. I've had a total of 1250 email (800 good, 450 spam) and it's overall accuracy has been 94%, but it's accuracy in the last week has been 99%.

I must I find the concept of Bayesian filtering very interesting. (maybe someday I'll write a PopTray plug-in...)

PopTray plug-in to ban spams

Post by homaquebec » Fri Jul 04, 2003 3:41 pm

An Anti-Spam plug-in for PopTray would be great. You surely know that a lot of persons who use a computer are nots specialists, so if a same software can be used to do the work, it's good. I offer my collaboration to test it. I'm specialist in communication and I don't tolerate things that are difficult when they can be easy (to use).

A last remark : I read that more and more we will receive emails written in different languages using different alphabets so Bayesian filtering will be more and more difficult to do. But « Let us cross the bridge when we arrive to the river ».

Thanks Renier and Thanks to all those who support You.

I don't know how to make it work.

In Poptray i set up servers as described on K9 page.
Then I have checked in K9 Advanced option Translate TOP n 0 into RETR 0.

But when I press check in Poptray, both K9 and Poptray icon are flashing, but nothing happen, except timeout :(

On PopTray's ACCOUNTS Tab set the SERVER to 127.0.0.1

Set PORT to 9999

Set LOGIN to (YOUR POP SERVER) / 110 / (YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT)

So it would look like this : pop.poptray.org/110/kydave@poptray.org

Your PASSWORD stays as is.

I have done so, but problem is in K9's 'Translate TOP n 0 to RETR n' option.
When I turn it ON I am getting always timeout. When I turn it off, my emails appears in Poptray, but nothing appears in K9.

In PopTray OPTIONS, ADVANCED OPTIONS, in the "Connection Time Out:" box, I have 120 seconds.

In K9's CONFIGURATION Tab, Connection Timeout box, I have 60 seconds.

Give those settings a try, and remember to make sure you save your settings.

Do you have any huge mails on the server? Or a lot of mails?

You can change the timeout in PopTray and also in K9 from the configuration tab.

Sounds like you might not have your password set right or your login correct inside PopTray.

In K9, click the LOG Tab and at the upper right click the "X" to delete the current log. Then click one of PopTrays accounts and do a CHECK. Do one with Outlook Express and then read the log and compare to determine what the reason for the error.

I have multiple email accounts on different servers, while i got this exact behaviour on one of them, while fake TOP n 0 still works well on the other. There was no big msgs on the server, the poptray just sits there and waits until it times-out, while the last line in K9 log when it happens (before the timeout) is the TOP n 0 line.

Seems that TOP n 0 isn't always replaced by RETR n the way it should.

BTW, the same account is checked normaly when K9 fake TOP n 0 is disabled, and works normaly in outlook express both via K9 and direct.

PS: could you pls pls pls make the option to download the msg body, preferably only once for each msg :-) I dont have neither time to code it, nor the right delphi version and components set to recompile it myself.

poptray + k9

Post by pviton » Tue Aug 12, 2003 8:56 pm

Would someone be kind enough to post step-by-step instructions on how to get PopTray to work with K9? (Both the PopTray and K9 setups). I've seen some partial posts on this, but I think it would be a good idea to pull all that stuff together.

Thanks!

Download and install K9. Have K9 start when Windows starts.

In PopTray make a note of the POP3 server port number for the account (usually 110). Change this to 9999.

In PopTray make a note of the POP3 server address for the account you will be using. Change this to 127.0.0.1

The user name should be changed to incorporate the original values from the above two steps into one character string.

Here's an example:

Original user name was kydave and the original POP3 server was pop.poptray.organd the original POP3 port number was 110.

The new user name entry would now look like pop.poptray.org/110/kydave

======================
In K9 on the CONFIGURATION TAB, check the box for Adding [Spam] to the END of the Subject Line

In K9 on the ADVANCED TAB, check the box for "Translate "TOP n0" commands into "RETR n"

That's all there is to it.
So, to recap:
On PopTray's ACCOUNTS Tab set the SERVER to 127.0.0.1

Set PORT to 9999

Set LOGIN to (YOUR POP SERVER) / 110 / (YOUR EMAIL USERNAME)

So the login would look like this : pop.poptray.org/110/kydave

Your PASSWORD stays as is.

======================
In K9 on the CONFIGURATION TAB, check the box for Adding [Spam] to the END of the Subject Line

In K9 on the ADVANCED TAB, check the box for "Translate "TOP n0" commands into "RETR n"
I suggest doing the same for your actual email program.
Then set a rule to 'move or delete' email with the word 'spam' in the subject.

OK, I've done this --- thanks! --- but I'm not sure what should happen next.

With both K9 and poptray running, I send myself an email, subject = test.

I then ask PopTray to check my account. It does so, and retrieves the test message.

However, in k9 : the log shows that the mail was checked, and in the log everything seems OK. However, in none of k9's other tabs (Recent Emails, Storage Area, Server Check) nothing appears. Should it??? Also, in k9's Statistics section, everything's zero.

Can someone tell me (a) if this sequence is wrong somehow; (b) if it makes sense, what should happen in k9 and (c) given that nothing happens in k9, can anyone guess what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks again!

Strange - it seems to be working now (maybe it took a while to think
about it?) - and now I do in fact see the emails in K9's Recent Emails tray.

So please ignore my last posting - and thanks again for the setup instructions - very clear.
